Environmentally friendly ECCO Chips is made by recycling wood diverted from ECCO’s other facilities. Wood is salvaged from Construction and Demolition (C&D) loads arriving at both our Materials Recycling Facility (MRF) and Landfill. Wood, such as dimensional lumber, is sorted from the C&D loads, processed through the MRF wood chipping line. The wood processing line grinds and screens the materials to remove nails, metal fasteners and other contaminants.
The wood chips are then coloured with non-toxic, all natural vegetable or mineral dye in the colourizer. The colourizer uses a predetermined ratio of water to all-natural vegetable dye to colour the wood mulch either Charcoal , Chocolate Brown or Red Brick. The coloured product is then packaged and shipped to reputable garden centres and/ or landscaping companies.
Re-use and Repurpose
Since 2009, our commitment to transforming yesterday’s waste (pallets) into tomorrow’s resources (mulch) has resulted in diverting nearly 100,000 tonnes of wood from the ECCO landfill and MRF to ECCO Chips.
ECCO transforms post-consumer wood waste such as Dimensional Lumber Scraps, Mill Ends and Wood Pallets into our environmentally friendly wood mulch. ECCO estimates one tree is saved for every 35 bags of ECCO Chips.
